Beyond Fear

Do I prefer to grow up and relate to life directly, or do I choose to live and die in fear?
- Pema Chodron, "The Places That Scare You"

....it is well to begin by the removal of doubt and fear.....
-The Science of Mind, pg 218

Fear is defined as alarm and agitation caused by the expectation or realization of danger. Many of us lose great amounts of energy to the expectation of danger, using our imagination to scare ourselves. Most of us have shared a cherished plan with a friend only to receive a list of reasons why the plan wont work. Sometimes the wet blanket energy rolls off, other times the fear sticks like glue.

The ability to face fear becomes even more necessary for those on a spiritual path being open to the manifestation of greater good requires courage. In the book Dune there is a mantra many of the characters use:

Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past me I will turn to see fear's path. Where fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Moving toward a cherished dream requires courage. Acknowledging the presence of the fear is the first step, naming the fear and whether or not it's valid follow. If you are obviously in harm's way by all means get out of it, but if you are working yourself in to fear, stop it and know you are stronger than it is.

Affirm: Facing fear directly and with courage I discover my true strength and power.
