Who Was That Masked Man?

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. ~ Hebrews 12:2

The world is saturated with Divinity….
~ The Science of Mind, pg 490

I used to love the television series, The Lone Ranger. In each episode the hero would encounter a situation requiring courage and intelligence to protect the innocent and defend the weak for the nefarious doings of villains. Having done his job, he would ride off with his faithful companion Tonto, leaving behind people who wondered aloud, “Who was that masked man?”

All of us wear masks; it is called being human. We wear our bodies and our personalities like cloaks over the reality of our divinity. We are all angels in a manner of speaking. We are spiritual beings, immortal and perfect, yet when we look at each other, we often see only the costumes of our physical existence.

At least once a month it seems I’m sitting in some airport waiting for a flight. I pass the time people watching, imagining stories about individuals and wondering about their lives. How often I’ve found that people who on the surface appear dull have stories that are complex and fascinating. I was caught with my bias showing once, when I found that the teenage with multiple body-piercing, tattoos, ad straggly hair was a regular volunteer at a center for mentally handicapped children.

Beyond this kind of unmasking is a deeper recognition=; to consciously see through a person’s human makeup and contemplate his soul’s journey. Each of us is saturated with divinity, as Ernest Holms says. Behind the façade of personality is a timeless essence that is peace, poise, and beauty. We can see it if we try.

Today I entertain angels and see the divinity in each person. All is well.
